The talent to make art out of others’ trash. Berta family, from Piemonte in Italy, is in very good terms with their neighbors. At the end of every harvest and in collaboration with all the top wineries in Barolo, Barbaresco, Asti and Alba, Bertas buy the skins that are left after the precious Nebbiolo, Barbera and Moscato grapes are pressed. With knowledge, patience and instinct, this marc becomes the raw material for some of the most expressive and complex distillates in the world. When, in 2003, Aiolos team started tasting grappas, we mainly got in contact with two styles. The first could be described as sophisticated “fire waters”- rough, tight and mineral. Let’s say masculine... The second style was exactly a thing we expected: commercial distillates that pretend to be of premium quality - finely crafted, no intensity, no rough edges, no character. Let’s say “castrated”… Our first reaction when we sniffed grappa Berta was: “No way” … Aromas impossible to be described. Complex, exotic personality, incredibly rich, with elegant sweetness on the palate. Even the standard, unaged Nebbiolo and Moscato are full of depth and nerve. As for the “Riserve”… Pieces of art that walk the line between grappa, cognac and all those fascinating scents stemming from our childhood… Grappa Berta are in 700 ml bottles, except Elisi & Unica (500 ml bottles). Roccanivo, Bric del Gaian, Tre Soli Tre, Magia and Riserva del Fondatore are bottled in handmade bottles and individual wooden caskets.
